School Violence & Bully Prevention promotion

Creating safe, inclusive schools is a core part of the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission to support every student. BIE staff are focused on ensuring that all students learn in environments where they feel valued, respected, and supported. BIE’s vision promotes student success across academic, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth — starting with a culture of respect, connection, and belonging.

Bullying and violence, including cyberbullying, can have lasting effects on a student’s mental health and academic progress. Preventing these behaviors requires a collective effort. Educators, families, and students all play a role in shaping school cultures that are grounded in respect, accountability, and care. Promoting cultural understanding, celebrating Native identity, and using trauma-informed practices are key to supporting healing and resilience.

The BIE encourages schools to take proactive steps by teaching digital citizenship, fostering open communication, and modeling empathy. These actions reflect the Bureau’s commitment to comprehensive wellness and culturally grounded education. Together, we can create school communities where Native youth feel empowered, supported, and ready to thrive.

The BIE Behavioral Health and Wellness Program offers free and confidential behavioral health and wellness services. The 24/7 Call Line is accessible to all BIE staff and students by dialing 1-844-ASK-BHWP (1-844-275-2497). Selecting Option 1 connects the caller with a trained mental health professional who can provide immediate support.
